For more than four decades, Burkhard Bader has worked with multihulls, their construction and the question of how people can travel on the water comfortably, independently and close to nature.
The beginning
A passion that began at the age of 14.
Burkhard Bader discovered his passion for sailing on the Kiel Fjord. Delivering yachts on the Rhine and canals, followed by a season as a skipper in the Aegean, led to the decision to build his own sailing catamaran. He sailed it around Europe into the Mediterranean.

His own journeys showed early on what really matters during extended stays on board.
From plans to a boatyard
Selling construction plans led to the first commission for a twelve-metre catamaran. Shown: the 44’ Advantage No. 5.

Since 1980
Advanced construction methods by conviction.
From the outset, Burkhard Bader used vacuum technology for lightweight sandwich laminates. Design, construction and practical use were never considered separately. Every experience on the water influenced the next designs.
Bader catamarans are sailing around the world without structural damage.
The 40-foot catamaran Matangi, built by an owner with his assistance and guidance, is still sailed predominantly single-handed between the Arctic and Southern Oceans after more than 30 years.
New waterways
Shallow draught as the key to experiencing nature.
After selling the boatyard, Burkhard Bader explored the waterways east of the Elbe as far as East Prussia aboard KRONLAND I. His journeys took him along the Vistula to Gdansk, close to the Russian border near Kaliningrad, and via the Elbe and Vltava to Prague.
The shallow draught opened up rivers, canals and anchorages that are barely accessible to conventional yachts. These experiences led to today’s motor catamarans Neuland 37 and KRONLAND II.
The book
Wünsche Wille Wege.
In his autobiographical book, Burkhard Bader describes in detail how glass fibres, resins and various chemicals are used to create a capable yacht. He introduces pioneers who developed modern multihulls, considers the mindset required for building a yacht yourself, and analyses successes and failures experienced by him and many of his customers. Informative accounts of his journeys on inland waterways complete this multifaceted book.
